Friday 23 April
2004- Troia
Nova at St John's Church - A concert on St George's day
St George was born in Cappadocia,
one of the most exotic and beautiful parts of present-day Turkey. This year you are invited to celebrate the saint's oriental
roots by attending a concert featuring traditional music of Greece, Turkey and the Middle
East at the
historic church of St
John's in
Bethnal Green. To mark St George's English connections Troia Nova will perform the concert premier
of their interpretation of Sir Edward Elgar's "In Smyrna", an
exquisite but little-known piece composed in 1905 following the composer's
visit to the port of Izmir in Turkey.
This is a double bill featuring Troia Nova supported
by Sharki performing Arabic classical and folk music.
Tickets (on the door) are £8 with £4
concessions. The concert begins at 7.30pm.
(St John's church is located opposite Bethnal Green's tube station -on the
central line-)
Sunday 21
December 2003-
Troia Nova at St Mark's Church
To reserve tickets please go to http://www.onion.org.uk/Goodwill.htm
Troia Nova's next appearance is on
the 21st of December at 7.30pm,
at St Mark's Church, Myddelton Square, London EC1R
1XX:
"Songs For St Nicholas", a concert of Greek, Turkish and Jewish
music. This concert celebrates the interaction of three nations and three
religions. From its earliest days Christianity has had a close relation with
Jewish music, and this relation was extended in both the East (Byzantium) and the West as history progressed. The emergence of Islam, and
in particular the Ottoman world, added richness and complexity to an already
beguiling mosaic. The relation continues to flourish. At Songs for St Nicholas
Troia Nova will perform secular and religious music, including classical and
folk music from Turkey, folk song and dance from Greece as well as songs of the Sephardim. In addition, the concert will
see the UK premiere of a little-known setting of a poem by Israel Ben-Mose
Nadjara (1555-1655) to a composition by Turkish composer Neyzen Yusuf Pasa. As
always, Troia Nova will aim to highlight the close and often surprising
connections between these interlinked cultures.
Friday 10
October 2003- Troia
Nova at St Mark's Church

of the Wheel: : A lecture/recital on the Muslims of Crete and the music of the
Island The title refers to one of Crete's best-loved poems, and this
lecture/recital looks at the Cretan Muslims and the lost musical world they
shared with the Christians of the island before the tragic events that forced
the last of their numbers into exile. Chris Williams will give a short talk which will be followed by a concert by
Troia Nova of music from Crete, mainland Greece and Turkey.Chris Williams has a PhD in Modern Greek from King's College, London. He has made a special study of the Cretan Muslims, the research
